Multilingual CV in Switzerland: One CV or Several?

Each version you send should be fully in one language, top to bottom, including section titles, dates and the file name.

Do not over-produce, either. You only need a version in a language you genuinely command at a working level (B2 and above) and that a real employer is likely to want. For most people in Switzerland that means two or three versions, for example English plus German, or French plus English, rather than all four national languages.

When one English version is enough

You do not always need multiple versions. A single, polished English CV is often the smarter choice when you are targeting multinationals, global banks, the pharma and life-sciences cluster around Basel, tech companies, or the international organisations and NGOs concentrated in Geneva. In these environments English is the daily working language, and a strong English CV signals that you fit right in.

Maintaining one excellent document beats spreading yourself thin across four mediocre ones. If your German or French is not yet at working level, a confident English CV plus an honest language section is far more convincing than a shaky local-language version that quietly contradicts the level you claim.

Turning multilingualism into a visible edge

If languages are a genuine strength, do not bury them at the bottom of page two. Make them work in three places. First, the professional summary: a line such as "Trilingual project manager (EN/DE/FR) bridging teams across the Rosti ditch" frames your languages as a business asset, not a hobby. Second, a clear languages section with honest CEFR levels (A1 to C2). Third, your experience bullets: show languages in action with lines like "Led weekly steering meetings in German and reported to French-speaking stakeholders in Geneva."

That last layer is what separates a true multilingual professional from someone who merely studied languages at school. Recruiters in Switzerland prize people who can switch register and language mid-meeting, because that is exactly what many roles demand. Evidence of using a language at work is worth far more than a self-assessed level alone.

Keep every version consistent

When the same recruiter, or two colleagues on the same panel, compare your German and English CVs, they must tell the same story. Inconsistencies read as carelessness at best and dishonesty at worst.
